# What are the pros and cons of wider vs narrower wheels for ATVs and UTVs?
## Wider wheels improve grip and style but may need modifications, while narrower wheels are lighter and easier to install but less aggressive.
Wheel width affects how your ATV or UTV handles, what tire sizes you can run, and how the machine looks. Here is a breakdown:
**Wider wheels:**
- Allow you to run wider tires with a better contact patch for improved traction in mud and loose terrain
- Give the machine a more aggressive, wide stance popular in the dune and show scene
- May require wheel spacers or different offsets to achieve proper clearance
**Narrower wheels:**
- Better for tight trail riding where a narrower machine footprint reduces obstacle strikes
- Often the better choice for stock suspension setups without lift kits
- Maintain the factory handling balance engineered into your machine
Most ATV and UTV manufacturers specify a wheel width range for each model. Staying within or close to that range ensures proper tire fitment and handling. Browse our [wheel catalog](https://www.functionpowersports.com/store/wheels) and filter by your machine for compatible options.
