# What is wheel diameter and why does it matter?
## Wheel diameter is the measurement across the face of the wheel and plays a major role in how your machine looks, rides, and performs. The right diameter depends on your driving style, with smaller sizes being better for off-road use and larger sizes delivering a bolder, more aggressive look for street and show builds.
Wheel diameter is the measurement across the wheel from one side to the other, measured in inches. On ATVs and UTVs, common wheel diameters range from 10' to 15' for most builds, with some larger diameter options available for specific UTV applications.
**Why it matters for your ATV or UTV:**
- **Tire selection:** Your wheel diameter determines which tires fit. A 14' wheel requires 14' tires. Most ATV and UTV tire brands (Maxxis, ITP, GBC, System 3) offer tires in the most common diameters for popular machine applications.
- **Clearance:** Larger diameter wheels combined with lower-profile tires can improve steering response but may reduce the cushioning effect on rough terrain. Smaller diameter wheels paired with taller tires provide more sidewall cushion for trail riding.
- **Overall tire diameter:** What matters most for performance and clearance is the total tire height, not just the wheel size. A 14' wheel with a tall tire may have the same overall diameter as a 15' wheel with a shorter tire.
